In recent months, the deformed judicial process of the Dictator, headed by a full time student Jameel, has sentenced some senior reformists of MDP in absentia, despite the fact they were around and willing to report to the court. First of this case was that of popular cartoonist and senior MDP member Ahmed Abbas. This was followed by Sodig from Thinadhoo and Siddig from Male'.
And now, there are increasing signs that Saleem Ali, the leading reformist from Thinadhoo will soon be locked away, fast-tracked through the new 'deformed' judicial process. He is currently in his native island but the courts has been coming to his residence in Male', looking for him. He has not been sent a summons yet and most probably won't even get one, but will be sentenced in absentia, analysts fear. After the treatment the dictator got from Thinadhoo last month during his visit, Saleem is now on top of the list of those that Gayyoom wants to put behind bars.
Maldives Dictator's new technique to lock away leading reformists in this manner is yet another example of how much of a crook he really is. All this reform agenda is nothing but rhetoric and propaganda to buy time, so that he could try and secure another term in office.
